How Much Do Google Ads Cost? How to Set a Realistic Budget
By Rankora Digital · · 6 min read
There is no single price for Google Ads, because you decide how much to spend and Google runs an auction for each search. What you can do is understand what drives the cost, and work backwards from the number of enquiries you want to a realistic monthly budget.
How you pay
Most search campaigns are pay-per-click: you are charged when someone clicks your ad, not when it is shown. You set a daily budget, and Google will not spend more than that over the month on average. Separate from ad spend, an agency or freelancer may charge a management fee.
What affects the cost per click
- Competition: popular, high-value keywords have more advertisers bidding, so clicks cost more.
- Keywords: a broad term like "marketing" usually costs more and converts worse than a specific one like "digital marketing agency in Gurugram".
- Ad and landing page quality: Google rewards ads that are relevant to the search and lead to a page that matches, which can lower what you pay for the same position.
- Location and timing: where and when your ads show changes who competes with you.
- Your bidding settings and how well the account is organized.
A simple way to set your budget
Start from the result you want, not from the click price. The basic formula is: monthly budget = number of enquiries wanted × cost per enquiry. And cost per enquiry = cost per click ÷ conversion rate (the share of visitors who enquire).
Illustration only, not a benchmark: if a click costs ₹40 and 5 out of every 100 visitors enquire, each enquiry costs about ₹800 (40 ÷ 0.05). To get 20 enquiries a month you would need roughly ₹16,000 of ad spend. Your real numbers will differ, which is why tracking matters.
How to avoid wasting money
- Set up conversion tracking for calls, forms and WhatsApp clicks before you spend anything.
- Target only the areas you actually serve.
- Add negative keywords so you stop paying for irrelevant searches.
- Send visitors to a page that matches the ad, not just the homepage.
- Review search terms and results regularly and adjust.
How long before you know if it works?
Campaigns can start getting clicks soon after launch, but it usually takes a few weeks of data to see which searches and ads bring enquiries. Judge results on cost per enquiry over a reasonable period, not on a single day.
Is Google Ads right for you?
Ads work well when people are already searching for what you sell and each enquiry is worth more than its cost. If your margins are thin or your website does not convert visitors, fix those first, or the budget will go to waste.
