What Is Local SEO? A Simple Guide for Small Businesses

By Rankora Digital · 31 October 2026 · 5 min read

Local SEO is the work of making your business easy to find when people search for something nearby, such as a service in their city or an "near me" search on their phone. It is how a neighbourhood shop, clinic, restaurant or service company shows up in Google Maps and in the local results at the top of the page.

How Google decides local results

Google says local results are based mainly on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Understanding them tells you where to put your effort.

  • Relevance: how well your profile and website match what the person searched for. Accurate categories, services and descriptions help here.
  • Distance: how far your business is from the searcher, or from the location named in the search. You cannot change this, but you can make sure your address and service area are correct.
  • Prominence: how well known your business is, based on things like reviews, mentions across the web and the strength of your website.

How local SEO differs from regular SEO

Regular SEO tries to rank web pages for searches anywhere. Local SEO focuses on searches where the place matters, and it relies heavily on your Google Business Profile in addition to your website. A business can appear in the Map results without ever having a top-ranking website page.

Who needs local SEO

Any business that serves customers in a specific area benefits: shops, clinics, restaurants, salons, repair services, schools, real estate agents and professionals such as lawyers or accountants. If customers search for you with a place name or "near me", local SEO applies.

The first steps to take

  1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile with accurate categories, hours, photos and services.
  2. Make sure your business name, address and phone number are identical everywhere they appear online.
  3. Make your website mobile-friendly and fast, with a clear page for each main service and the areas you serve.
  4. Ask genuine customers for reviews and reply to every one.
  5. Add LocalBusiness structured data to your website so search engines can read your details clearly.
  6. Connect Google Search Console and track which searches bring people to your site.

How long does it take?

Fixing profile mistakes can change how you appear within weeks. Stronger rankings in competitive areas usually take a few months of steady work. Be careful with anyone who guarantees a first-page or number-one position, because no one can promise that on Google.
