How to Choose a Website Design Agency: 8 Things to Check

By Rankora Digital · 4 November 2026 · 6 min read

The agency you pick decides how your website looks, how fast it loads and whether customers can find it on Google. Many businesses choose on price alone and regret it later. Use this checklist to compare agencies fairly, wherever in the world they are based.

1. Look at real work, not just screenshots

Open the live websites in their portfolio on your phone and on a computer. Check how fast they load, whether they are easy to use and whether they look current. Ask which parts the agency built and, if you can, speak to one of those clients.

2. Ask about their process

  • How do they plan the site structure and content before design starts?
  • How many design revisions are included?
  • Who writes the content, and who supplies images?
  • What does the timeline look like, and what do they need from you to keep to it?

3. Check that SEO is built in

A good looking site that Google cannot understand will not bring visitors. Ask whether they set up page titles, headings, clean URLs, a sitemap, image optimization and fast mobile performance as part of the build, and whether they can help with Google Search Console.

4. Make sure the site works well on mobile

Most people browse on phones. Test the agency's own website and their client sites on a phone. Buttons should be easy to tap, text easy to read and pages quick to open.

5. Get a clear, written quote

  • What exactly is included: pages, features, revisions, integrations?
  • What is extra, such as extra pages, copywriting or photography?
  • Are hosting, domain and ongoing maintenance included or charged separately?
  • How and when are payments made?

6. Confirm ownership and access

You should own your domain, content and design files, and have admin access to your website. Be careful with agencies that keep your domain or hosting in their own name with no way to transfer it.

7. Ask about support after launch

Websites need updates, security fixes and backups. Ask who handles these, how quickly they respond to problems and how to reach them, for example by email or WhatsApp.

8. Be careful with big promises

No honest agency can guarantee a number one Google ranking or a fixed amount of traffic. Be wary of guaranteed results, very low prices or pressure to sign quickly. A good agency explains what it will do and how progress will be measured.
