Technical SEO Checklist for Small Business Websites
By Rankora Digital · · 6 min read
Technical SEO makes sure search engines can find, read and understand your website. Even great content struggles if pages are blocked, slow or confusing. This checklist covers the basics every small business website should get right.
1. Make sure Google can crawl and index your pages
- Check that robots.txt does not block important pages.
- Make sure pages you want in search do not have a noindex tag.
- Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console to see whether a page is indexed.
- Link to every important page from another page so crawlers can find it.
2. Submit an XML sitemap
A sitemap lists the pages you want indexed. Submit it in Google Search Console and keep it updated when you add or remove pages. Only include real, public pages that return a normal response.
3. Use one clear version of your site
Pick one address, for example with or without www and always on https, and redirect the others to it. Set a canonical URL on each page so Google knows which version to show. This avoids duplicate versions competing with each other.
4. Improve speed and mobile experience
- Compress images and use modern formats where possible.
- Remove scripts and plugins you do not need.
- Make sure text is readable and buttons are easy to tap on a phone.
- Check your pages with Google PageSpeed Insights and fix the main issues it reports.
5. Write unique titles and descriptions
Each page needs its own title and meta description that describe what is on the page in natural language. Use one H1 per page and clear subheadings. Avoid repeating the same title across many pages.
6. Fix broken links and errors
Check Search Console for pages with errors or 404 responses. Fix or redirect broken links, and keep your internal links pointing to working pages. A clean site is easier for crawlers to understand.
7. Add structured data where it fits
Structured data, such as organization, local business, FAQ or article markup, helps search engines understand your content. Only mark up information that is actually on the page and true. Test it with Google's Rich Results Test.
8. Keep checking Search Console
Review Search Console regularly for indexing problems, mobile issues and the searches that bring people to your site. Fix problems as they appear, and update content that is out of date. Technical SEO is not a one time job.
